After you buy a suppressor, it ships to your local dealer on a tax-free Form 3, then transfers to you one of two ways: a same-day 4473 in a free state, or an eForm 4 that is now clearing in days, not months. The dealer holds it while it waits to be approved by the ATF.

The process is the same no matter what suppressor you buy. Here is the exact clock from checkout to pickup, with the real times we see moving a suppressor from our shop to your hands.

What happens the moment you click buy?

Three things have to happen before a suppressor is legally yours: it has to reach a dealer near you, that dealer has to transfer it to you, and you have to go pick it up. Placing the order online kicks off the first one automatically. You do not file anything yourself yet.

Most of the wait people dread is not the paperwork anymore. It is logistics and a background check, and both move fast now.

Buying online does not put a suppressor in your hands that day. It starts a short, tracked handoff from our shop, to your dealer, to you.

What is a Form 3, and why does your suppressor need one?

A Form 3 is the ATF application that transfers a suppressor between two license holders, tax free. When you buy direct, that means moving the suppressor from us, the manufacturer, to the dealer you chose to receive it. It’s the step no buyer guide explains, and it happens before you ever touch a form yourself.

Here is our cadence. We submit the Form 3 within one business day of receiving your local dealer’s FFL and SOT. These are two electronic documents your dealer emails to us. For many dealers we already have these on file. Others need to send us a copy. Once we receive both documents, we submit the Form 3 with the ATF electronically. The ATF approves most Form 3 transfers the next business day, and we ship the same day it clears. So your suppressor is usually on its way to your dealer within a few business days after checkout.

The Form 3 is our job, not yours, and on our end it is a matter of days, not weeks.

Which of the two paths are you on?

Once your suppressor reaches the dealer, one of two things happens, and which one depends on your state and your dealer. A 2026 federal court ruling opened a faster path in the free states for suppressors bought through Silencer Shop directly. Pretty much anywhere else, and any time you buy from us, it is the standard eForm 4.

Free state, bought through an opted-in Silencer Shop dealer, means a 4473 and no NFA wait. Anything else means an eForm 4.

How does the free-state path work once your suppressor arrives?

If you are in a free state and bought through a Silencer Shop dealer who opted into the faster process, there is no Form 4 and no NFA wait. You complete a 4473 and a background check and walk out with the suppressor.

These transfers happen the same day or next day after it’s received at the dealer. The gating item is simply the dealer logging the arrival and running your check.

In a free state on the fast path, “after you buy” can be as short as a day once the suppressor lands at the dealer.

How does the eForm 4 path work once your suppressor arrives?

Everywhere else, your dealer files an eForm 4 to transfer the suppressor to you. You provide your information, a set of fingerprints, and a passport-style photo. The dealer submits it electronically, the system notifies your local law enforcement automatically, and the background check runs.

Filed this way, approvals are fast. According to Silencer Shop, individuals are seeing 1 to 21 days, with a median of 3 to 4. For trusts it is 1 to 26 days, with a median of 6. Not sure which to file? See our breakdown of an NFA gun trust versus individual.

The eForm 4 is no longer the year-long wait it used to be. Most buyers clear in under a week.

How long does the whole thing really take?

Nothing here is a promise. The ATF and your dealer both have a say, and any single step can run longer. But the direction is nothing like the old paper process, where a year was normal. For the current picture, see our breakdown of eForm 4 wait times.

For a typical buyer, ordering a suppressor and shooting it suppressed in the same month is now the normal case, not the lucky one.

What can slow the clock down?

Your dealer sets the pace on both ends: how fast they log the suppressor in, and how fast they file. A slow shop adds days no matter how quick we and the ATF are.

The free-state path carries one more caveat. The 2026 ruling is not final and the government can still appeal, so treat that route as current but subject to change. What do you actually do at pickup?

When your transfer clears, your dealer is notified and you go in to get the suppressor. From that point the suppressor is yours, with no repeat paperwork per range trip.
