How you buy a suppressor depends on where you live. In the 27 free states, buying an Angstadt suppressor through Silencer Shop can mean a simple 4473 and a background check, with no Form 4 and no NFA registration (assuming your dealer has opted into that process.) Everywhere else, and any time you buy direct, it is the standard eForm 4, now with a $0 transfer tax.

So the first question is not how to file a Form 4. It is whether you need one at all. This guide answers that first, then walks the eForm 4 start to finish for everyone who does.

Do I need a Form 4 to buy a suppressor?

Maybe not. A 2026 federal court ruling opened a faster path for some buyers, so the answer now depends on two things: your state, and how you buy. There are four situations.

• Free state, buying through Silencer Shop, dealer opted in: no Form 4. You complete a 4473 and a background check, the same as buying a rifle.
• Free state, but your dealer kept the old process, or you buy direct from Angstadt: standard eForm 4.
• NFA state: standard eForm 4, even through Silencer Shop.
• Banned state (the saddest group of all): you cannot legally own a suppressor at all.

The Form 4 is no longer automatic, but it is still the path for most buyers, so start by finding your state below.

Which states need a Form 4 and which do not?

The country falls into three groups after the ruling. State law did not change, so a banned state is still banned and an NFA state still runs the Form 4. The ruling opened the 4473 path only in the free states, and even there it is not guaranteed.

What is the Silencer Shop ruling, in plain terms?

The eForm 4 is the ATF application to register and transfer a suppressor to you. In August 2026 a federal court ruled that the NFA registration requirement could not stand for suppressors and blocked its enforcement.

The order is narrow. It protects the plaintiffs in the case and their customers, not the general public by default. Silencer Shop Foundation was a plaintiff, and the ruling covers a plaintiff’s customers with no membership required, so an Angstadt suppressor bought through Silencer Shop or a Silencer Shop authorized dealer runs through a covered channel. Why the faster path still depends on your dealer

In a free state, each dealer decides for itself which process to run. Some have switched to the 4473 route, with no Form 4, no fingerprints, and no wait. Others still run the old NFA process by choice.

That is a dealer decision, not a legal requirement, and you cannot force a dealer to switch. Before you count on the quick path, call your dealer and ask which process they use. If they have not opted in, you still buy the same suppressor, it just runs as an eForm 4.

Is the ruling final?

Not yet. The order took effect in August 2026, but the government has until early October 2026 to appeal, and the case could move for months.

How do you buy a suppressor with a Form 4, start to finish?

Five steps: choose the suppressor and a dealer, file the eForm 4, submit fingerprints and a photo, wait for the background check, then pick it up. The dealer holds the suppressor the whole time and hands it over once your stamp is approved.

The only step unique to a suppressor is the eForm 4, and your dealer does most of that with you.

Where do you actually buy the suppressor?

You can buy online. Order the suppressor and it ships from the maker to a dealer near you, who receives it and holds it until your transfer clears. You take it home after it’s approved.

How do you file the eForm 4?

The eForm 4 is filed electronically through the dealer, which is why approvals are so much faster than the old paper process. You provide your information, a set of fingerprints, and a passport style photo.

The system notifies your local law enforcement automatically, so there is no separate form to mail. You fill in your part, the dealer submits, and the application goes straight into the ATF system.

Should you file as an individual or through a trust?

What does the tax stamp cost in 2026?

Zero. The federal transfer tax dropped from $200 to $0 on January 1, 2026, and it applies to every suppressor buyer in every state where suppressors are legal. This is separate from the court ruling, and it did not change with it.

The only cost now is the suppressor itself, so the price on the product page is close to the real out the door number.

How long does approval take?

Most electronic Form 4 approvals are clearing in days rather than the months, or the near year, the process used to take. For a typical buyer that means ordering a suppressor and shooting it suppressed the same month.

What happens once you are approved?

Your dealer is notified that the stamp cleared, and you go in to pick up the suppressor. You complete a 4473 at the counter, the same form you fill out for any firearm, and take the suppressor home.
